Anybody here been in that situation?  Seems after enough recovery time it should be fine. At least I hope so!

Any experiences/suggestions?

Thanks

I had inguinal hernia surgery in late September 2021. Took three days off from work, had lifting restrictions for another couple of weeks. During my follow up appointment with my surgeon I asked if he thought it would be ok to do a four day backpacking trip in late October. While he couldn’t comprehend why anyone would want to undertake such an activity, he said it shouldn’t be a problem. And it wasn’t, felt great with no issues.

Mine was a non event, after a few days and I was doing my normal daily hikes. After 2 years I don’t even think about it anymore.

For six months or so, if I thought about it and pushed and prodded the area I could feel a slight amount of discomfort, but it didn’t interfere with anything I wanted to do.

My experience mirrors the previous posts. Even 6 years later I would have rare sensations when touched a certain way but never painful. Doc said scar tissue can cause that but it’s not limiting nor a concern.

I had a double inguinal hernia repair with mesh and fully opened on both sides.  30 days after  I went on a 14 day trip covering a little over 200 miles with no big issues.  A bit painful at times but ok.  Climbing up scree and boulders along with downed trees were the hardest.
I have a bit more scar tissue than I would have if I’d waited a bit but it isn’t an issue.   Feels like a rolled up sock in my pocket sometimes.  I was 51 at the time for reference.

I have not had one but I have majorly injured my pelvis. Take it slow and make sure to do a lot of stretching – especially your hip flexors and your IT band if you have a desk job. You want the proper pelvic tilt while moving

Thanks for the advice Christopher. I don’t have a desk job (fortunately!) I’m a carpenter by trade, so once I’m healed up enough, I’ll be back into a pretty physical routine. Surgery is tomorrow, and from the comments here and elsewhere I shouldn’t have anything big to worry about. We’ll see!
