A couple of days after departure, two backpackers in California’s San Gorgonio wilderness became disoriented, injured, and trapped in a steep canyon during a winter rain, sleet, and snowstorm. Their PLB signal triggered rescue attempts.
The first team to reach them were also pinned down by the storm for 30 hours, before helicopters brought all of them out – five days after the trip started. Dozens of rescuers from five nearby counties were involved at some point with multiple rescue attempts.
Smart move: deciding to hunker down and use the PLB.
Less smart move: continuing to travel after getting lost in a storm.Probably more lessons, but not enough information at this time.
