    A properly designed backpack frame sheet can be enough without a metal frame.

    Decades ago my second favorite backpack of all time (product and company long gone) had a sewn-in sheet of stiff polyethylene with thin padding, against my back and partly into the hip belt. Carried loads comfortably to 30 pounds (14 kg) and beyond on my much younger body. Empty pack weighed about 2 pounds (1 kg), using 1980s design elements like polyurethane-coated nylon and lash tabs instead of side pockets.

    Try, adjust, repeat until happy. Good luck.
