Attached hipbelt pockets with seamed hipbelt (vs. binding)

So I’m at the point in my first MYOG backpack project where my mind turns to pockets. For V1 of my pack (made of Tyvek), I had the hipbelt inside out and rolled it onto the foam. (I’m sticking with a seam sewn inside out—no binding edges for me, thank you very much.)

If (in future iterations) I add attached pockets, I can’t imagine being able to use that method to add the foam. Have you tried/done it that way? And/or what other method worked for you?

And what’s your take on the advantage of having attached vs detachable pockets on the hipbelt?

I’ve never tried it, but I’ve considered making the pockets as if they were removable, then putting the pocket onto the hipbelt, putting the needle inside the pocket, and sewing straight through everything on the top and bottom, parallel to the pocket. In theory, it would seem to work without compressing too much of the padding.

Adam G—Yeah, that could work…assuming your machine can stitch through three layers of fabric and (in my current case) 1/2″ EVA foam!

I have a new (ancient) sewing machine arriving tomorrow, but I doubt it will be able to handle that thickness.

I’m pretty sure my Singer 401(A) can do it. I’ve definitely sewn through one layer of webbing, inner and outer fabric, EVA foam, and spacer mesh without a problem. I’ve also sewn through three layers of webbing (by themselves), although it was definitely struggling a bit. You have to use a thick needle meant for jeans and get the tension right to do that, although I bet you could sew on pockets using a standard needle. Otherwise, I bet you could just glue them on. Actually, that may be quite a bit easier, just as secure, and look just as good.

Adam G—Glue, that’s an interesting idea!

Never done hipbelt pockets; but here is a thought: sew a piece of grosgrain ribbon into your top seam, at the location and length of your desired pocket, so that when you turn the belt right side out that ribbon is sticking out of the seam. Now sew your pocket onto that ribbon. Or, if you want removeable pockets, sew a zipper or velcro to the ribbon, as a means of attachment.

Paul—That’s a clever idea. For my current iteration (version 2) I’m making the pockets removable which is easier.
