Atom+ Questions

I think I’m going to pull the trigger on a 40 liter Atom+ Pack

I currently have an MLD Core 28 and a Gossamer Gear Kumo. The latter works well for me but it’s overstuffed when I carry my Bearicade Scout. Also, I’m thinking about going back to a hammock setup from time to time and that is not possible in the Kumo with more than a little bit of food.

I’m very tempted to pick up a Prophet. It’s an excellent size and I love MLD’s shoulder straps and waist belt. The problem is that I didn’t find the Prophet comfortable with a load in excess of 20# and I liked it a lot more at 18#. I think a minimal frame like the inverted U on the Atom+ will give me a couple of extra pounds of carrying capacity due to improved load transfer. I doubt I would ever carry more than 22, maybe 23# in it. I’d like to be able to have the ability to carry 20 or 23# comfortably.

I will probably order the stock model (ships in 3 weeks) but I’m considering a custom version.

Questions:

  1. Do people like Atom’s shoulder strap pockets? I have only used stretchy shoulder pockets on a LiteAF pack and did not care for them. I usually carry my phone on my left strap using a pocket from Justin’s UL and a small Gatorade bottle for drink mixes in a Zimmerbuilt pocket on my right shoulder. Ordering the Atom+ without shoulder strap pockets requires going with a custom pack (ships in 8 weeks and adds  $45 to the price). I’m not excited about the extra wait and expense to delete the shoulder pockets. Maybe the stock pockets are ok with a small Gatorade bottle?
  2. I’m pretty sure I want the 40 liter size which is supposed to have 35 liters of capacity in the main compartment. That should be enough since I’m comfortable with my Kumo which holds 28 in the main compartment. I’m wondering if anyone has experience with the Atom+ 40 liter and can compare it to other packs for relative size? Comparisons to a Prophet, Burn, Ohm, or Kumo would be particularly helpful because I know those packs well.
  3. I’m not thrilled about Atom’s move to EPX fabrics. I appreciate that they have a better environmental footprint but I’d rather the durability of Ultra 400/200 or a 210 Gridstop like MLD/ULA uses. If I go with a custom pack and ask really nicely maybe Atom would make me a 210 Extreema pack (they still use it for their harnesses and side pockets and used to make full packs from it). Any thoughts on the EPX fabric? It’s so new… Any thoughts?
  4. I suppose I’d be interested in suggestions of other packs to look at it if I’m missing something obvious. I don’t want anything that is particularly heavy or has a very structured hipbelt. I’m pretty sure I want a minimal frame.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts people share.

I cannot speak to the Atom+ question but my experience with my Prophet parallels yours.  I love the fit and carrying comfort of the pack at weights under 19 or 20 lbs.  But north of that, it becomes very uncomfortable.

Yeah I’ve even thought of carrying my gear in a Prophet with a Ridgerest or generic CCF pad in it burrito-style but I don’t like sleeping on CCF pads and that seems like a heavy way to get a frame.

Matthew, I agree with you 100% in the transition to EPX fabrics. With that said, i do think the EPX fabrics will stand the test of time just as the other fabrics will. Its a matter of how much overkill/extended lifetime you want… The standard 210d gridstop and the like, is IMO still a top contender for optimal fabrics.

Do you measure durability in the effectiveness of the waterproof membrane or the strength of fabric (WP or not)? I think this is a very important question. With that said, I tend to build myself a new pack every year…doesn’t have to be very durable if i didn’t want it to be.

Hi Matthew,

I am not sure if you have considered the SWD Ultralight Movement. I do not have one, but I really like the looks of it for light, framed pack (about 23-24 oz). Not sure whether the hipbelt would be more structured than you are looking for. In some pictures it looks to have significantly more cushion than others. Not sure if they would be willing to do a custom hipbelt…

The hipbelt in these pictures looks like the Wild Bill’s https://www.swdbackpacks.com/product-page/Movement-35L-UltralightBackpack

But the hipbelt on these seems less padded https://www.swdbackpacks.com/product-page/removable-hip-belt

Hey Iago. Thanks for the suggestion. I didn’t look at their packs and I think that hip belt looks pretty good but their lead time was a non-starter for me. I decided to go with a stock Atom+ which is shipping in just a few weeks.

I came very close to ordering an Atom+ 40, but instead went with an SWD. When I was comparing the different sizes, I used an online volume calculator and input the bottom circumference x the top circumference x the height. All of the dimensions were readily available on the manufacturers web sites. I found that one pack makers 40l was another pack makers 35l when the dimensions were identical. I do remember that the Atom+ 40l was more similar to a 35l with regard to total volume when compared to the others I was considering.

Yeah I was on the border between ordering a 40 or a 50. I hope it’s at least a little larger than the Kumo. 🤞🤞

Pack arrived yesterday. I have a fractured hand, dislocated finger, & torn off fingernail, so I have not really loaded it up properly yet but I’m quite impressed with the pack. I like the hipbelt and shoulder straps, which seem to rival or better MLD’s design. The pack is definitely larger than my Kumo and seems a little larger I remember the MLD Burn to be. It’s definitely smaller than a Prophet. I’m very excited to have a smaller, minimal pack with a light frame in it.

I am not convinced that the bottom pocket or stretchy shoulder strap pockets are for me but time will tell.

“I have a fractured hand, dislocated finger, & torn off fingernail”

Yeah, moderating these forums can be rough…. :-)
