In Antarctica we were issued Whisperlites. There were other larger stoves for inside structures, but the Whisperlite is what we used when carrying gear at 30 below. Granted, it was only that temp for a couple nights, but the Whisperlite worked as expected (kinda temperamental, but fine with experience).

Otherwise, as a neutral party reading through this interesting thread, it seems like that larger dog-musher alcohol stove is the most foolproof.
