The Ms. and I are aiming to pick up Squamish Hoodies during post holiday sales to replace our pre-2012 Houdinis which met with an unfortunate laundry accident *sniffle*. Typically wear them over a baselayer (Ibex Indie or Cap 4), or over a baselayer + close-fitting 100 wt. midlayer like an R1 Hoody, so don’t need a lot of room under it. Looking for a fit that isn’t loose or tight. We’re overseas and unable to try them on now, so appreciate any size guidance. Which size do you recommend for:

-Male, 175 lbs, 6 ft tall, 42 in. chest, arm 33-34 in., slim athletic build, typically wears US size Large jackets and sometimes Medium depending on cut?

-Female, 130 lbs 5 ft 6 in. tall, slim athletic build, typically wears US size 8 Medium size jackets and sometimes Small depending on cut?

What are your measurements, which size do you wear and how does it fit you?

Can’t speak for women’s but I’m a medium in both a 2012 Houdini and my Squamish. Squamish a little slimmer, but not enough to size up unless the Houdini was already on the edge.

edit: Squamish fitter is better for me as it is longer in the body and sleeves and cut for a slimmer waist. Hood is also vastly superior. Hmm I think writing this has convinced me to take the extra 1.5oz on the PCT next year :)

Thanks Lachlan. I don’t remember what year our Houdinis were, but I wore a L and the Ms. a Medium and they had quite a boxy fit and were a bit loose. I got my L from an outlet sale and never tried the M. What are your measurements?

Hi Ethan,

I typically wear XXL garments and have found the 2014 XXL Squamish to be a good fit for me.  I wore it Nordic skiing this weekend with a nylon shirt and medium weight polartec base layer under it and still had enough room to wear a Lands End (unsure of weight) fleece under it if need be.  With the fleece on, it felt like I was wearing an appropriately sized Arc’teryx Atom.

Based on my experience, I’d recommend getting whatever size jacket you’d normally purchase and you should have room for a layer or two under it.

There are lighter windshirts out there but for me, this is one of my favorite garments and highly recommend it for consideration.

Ethan,

I’m close to your size, and my Large Squamish (few years old) fits me well.  Hope this helps.

Thanks Ian and Aubrey, much appreciated. Based on your comments I’m going to go with a large. It’s always better to have a little more room than not enough, and on length alone I probably need a large, though my old boxy Patagonia Houdini had too much room for the way I like to use a windshirt, which is just over a baselayer, or max over a base layer + close-fitting 100 weight fleece (and if really cold maybe add a fleece or synthetic insulation vest).

Now to find a good Dead Bird sale…

Don’t know if this is helping at this point, but…
-Male, 174 lbs, 5ft11, 41.5 chest. Typically wears EU size M, occasionally L.

Bought my Squamish near the end of 2013 and am very happy with the size. It has a relatively ‘trim’ fit which does not allow for thick layering underneath, but does not constrict movement (walking, XC skiing) with a base layer and a thin, close-fitting fleece. Wouldn’t wear any more than that, though.

Andreas, we’re nearly the same size/weight. What size Squamish Hoody did you buy?

Ah, I see I left out that minor detail. It was a size M. Don’t know whether the sizes are still the same, though.

I am often between a large and an xl. I went with the xl for my Squamish and it gives me a bit a room underneath to layer.

I am just about your build. I own both the M and L in the most recent iteration of the Squamish.

Both will fit fine but if you like your clothes to fit trim the M would be better. If you ever might wear a light jacket underneath like Nano Air or similar, it will still fit without squeezing the loft. Nothing thicker though.

I wear my L a lot too and thanks to the elastic cuffs and waist it doesn’t feel comically big. However if winds pick up it gets pretty flappy since there’s a decent amount of extra material. The fit for my size (6’0 170#) on a L is similar to wearing a comfy lounge hoody, with a decent amount of internal space.
