Hello everyone,

For those of you BPL members who are also into Resort Skiing, please check out my in depth review of the Arc’teryx Macai Jacket.

https://youtu.be/s43-aQjn54s

There is also a short addendum video which I forgot to insert @ 8:10 into the video, which shows a comparable 3 jacket layering system I’ve put together based on Arc’teryx jackets:

Finally, I’ve calculated the thermal warmth of Coreloft Compact 60 insulation (aka Thermore Classic Super Compact 60g/m2) in my review to be ~0.65 clo/oz/yd2, based Arc’teryx Patent for Down Contour Construction

https://patents.google.com/patent/US20130177731A1/en?oq=20130177731

Can someone have a look at the Patent at section [0034] and confirm if my calculation is correct?

Thanks!

Weekend,

Thank you for a very intersting analysis. I read the patent and from it calculated the same value you did (.65 clo/oz) for 60 g/m2 Coreloft aka 60 g/m2 Thermore Compact. This is a comparable efficiency insulation to Polarguard 3D @ .63 clo / oz or Polarguard Delta @ .68 clo / oz.

Your video addendum was particulary interesting; showing the combination of three component jackets. Their concept of having a condensation resistant synthetic layer between the  down layer and hard shell is reasonable for extremely cold conditions.

Thank you kindly Richard for the confirmation of the 0.65 value from the Patent, and very glad you found both reviews interesting.

It’s very clever what they thought of back in 2012/2013 when they filed that Patent in anticipation for the release of the Macai, though wondering whether Primaloft Gold Down Blend using 70% water resistant down + 30% synthetic may be more advantageous in providing comparable warmth values when dry plus perhaps better condensation resistance.

Weekend,

That is an interesting question. I have never tested the moisture handling characteristics of down synthetic blends nor have I seen any peer reviewed research on that topic.
