I am looking for a warmer pair of pants for hiking, climbing, birding, and photography. I run cold so even with warm upper body layers I will be cold in the 40s/50s as soon as I stop moving especially in the wind/shade.

My main fall outdoor pants have been the Prana Stretch Zion so I am looking for something warmer. I am considering the Gamma LT or the Activator 3.0. I would really love to NOT wear an extra layer(ie SmartWool tights) while climbing as it always feels like I am inhibiting my movement.

1)Which of these is warmer?

2)How much warmer is the Gamma LT compared to Zion?

3)How much warmer is the Activator compared to Zion?

4)Any other advice, comparisons, or product recommendations?

Thanks

Funny enough I’m sitting here in Zion pants, but I pretty much live in Gamma pants. I’d say the biggest difference between them is the Gamma are better wind lockers, and secondarily are better at resisting light precipitation. I also prefer the stretch of the gammas more, the build in belt is a little more streamlined and I prefer the more tapered fit at the ankles. To me the gammas are of a higher caliber than the zions, and fit me better for outdoor activity. The Zion are basically just pants with a crotch gusset- they’re pretty basic in comparison.

You’ll be warmer in the gammas, but don’t fool yourself that it’s night and day- they’re still fairly light compared to some of the dedicated cold weather/ice climbing pants out there.

Thanks.  Good to know that the Gamma LT is only a little warmer than the Zion.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the Marmot Scree?

I like the Marmot Scree Pants for the colder end of autumn. They’re pretty tough and have good stretch. I’ve never seen a pair of Prana Stretch Zions though, so I can’t give you a comparison.
