Apps for Tracking Hiking Training

Hi All

I’ve recently acquired a heart rate monitor so I can train more effectively for hiking. I’ve been looking at Training Peaks, Garmin Connect, Polar Flow and Strava as possible apps to use to log my training. They all seem good in their way, but I haven’t found one which is really very hiking aware, as it were. In particular, I thought it would be good to be able to add pack weight as a metric for the workouts I record, and to have this factored in by the various algorithms when they calculate VO2, Calories, etc. Does anyone know of a training app which includes such a feature? Or which is generally superior for hiking training?

Thanks!

William

PS I’m also looking at the Garmin Instinct Solar versus Apple Watch if anyone has an opinion there, too.

I recently picked up the Instinct Solar. Cant say much about it. It works for me. Tracking my hikes and runs.. pairs with my phone and also my Inreach mini. Gives me total miles hiked, time,  average mph, ascent and descent totals and a lot more! It gives me weather and storm alerts, compass.. so much I can’t list it all. It keeps me aware of sunrise and sunset every day with exact times for each, which i appreciate while hiking long miles/days out on trail. I have an alarm set for 20 minutes before sunset.. so I know to start looking for camp spot.. It has a lot of options.. heart rate, o2 sensor, and much more.. but I keep all that turned off as I do not need any of that. It is nice that it charges in the sun and day light.. i would not rely 100% on solar charging.. but it definitely gives it a nice boost. It also is a nice looking watch and not clunky or bulky. Not fragile either.. it is definitely made rugged and for outdoors.

thanks very much for that. I think probably the Garmin is a better fit for me than the Apple Watch. It covers training and outdoors at the same time.

@wilb I’m using Training Peaks but can’t figure out how to enter pack weight for workouts. Let me know if you find an app that’s out there

Ok, will do. I actually think the backpacking/hiking side of things is not particularly well served on fitness tracking sites. I have found one trainer and guide who has a lot of excellent hiking-specific Youtube content and who also offers training programmes on an app called Just Coach. It doesn’t track activities but the content is great. If you search for Chase Mountains on Youtube he’ll show up.
