I was checking out a wilderness in Montana and see there is a new list of approved canisters, looks like I’ll have to obtain yet another can, I have an original Ursack, Bearicade and a black Garcia Machine, plus a Critter Sack.  Hate having to buy a Bear Vault.

If something was on the list when manufactured it should be grandfathered in for those years.  Would the agencies not agree?  It’s a pain if the IGBC doesn’t make this clear on their website, I might carry a printed version when using the out of manufacture item. That being said the plastic may become brittle over time.

Would be nice if so.  But how do current FS/PS employees know it all?  I’ve had a Ranger question me why my original Ursack was just laying on the ground.  Told him that was how was advised a few years after purchase, to prevent resource damage.  !  He took down my email addy, never heard another word.  Getting so I don’t bp much anymore or week long trips.

So if I’m reading that correctly, Bearikades and Bare Boxers are no longer approved? Seems like the obvious cause that they didn’t pay their administrative fees? Wonder how much will be enforced…

Forgot to mention, are all those black canisters in use by FS going to be surplus sold?  :)

The Bearikade was never IGBC approved.  It was SIBBG(?) approved but that organization disbanded when it was sued by Ursack.

Thank you for the info.  Have been out of the loop on many bp topics, winding bping down.  Don’t even snow camp anymore.

The instructions for the Ursack don’t advise laying the bag on the ground, unless that’s something very recent. It doesn’t make sense really, does it? You want it tightly tied to a tree.

Sorry, cannot recall where I got the info, believe it was so as to not cause resource damage if a bear worked the Ursack trying to get at the contents.  Would a bear then carry off the bag?  :). I’ve never had an issue with a bear, more trouble with deer.  It’s been over 15 years since that trip.  The Ursack I have isn’t approved anymore as far as I know, so have been using my black can or if in an area with no set manufacture can designation, use my Wild Ideas can since it is much lighter.  I only use a can when required.  Has been over 50 years of bping.

The couple trips into Glacier NP, where required, used a bag hung on the cables.

I am not throwing away perfectly good, certified at time of production Bear Boxer. That’s irresponsible and silly.

From reading, the list in my link could get updated as products get reapproved when fees, documentation is submitted.

This seems really backwards and a smells of a money grab. This will and is creating multiple version of the approved list floating around. Which one does the ranger have while checking yours?

+1

Will some fees and docs get sent in later in the season and will the Ranger have the latest list?  Thinking like I have read, best to call the authorities where you plan on going if it is one where bear cans are usually required.

Where I was going with a Montana friend, sounds like (slow to comprehend), like a hang would be good also.

I agree. The tried and true Garcia can is now ‘not approved’. That’s absurd. I own the Bear Boxer, Garcia can, couple of BVs and Ursack. At least I have options but still. Shouldn’t have to put this burden on the consumer.

I just wonder though if Garcia just hasn’t been on the ball and sent in fees and updated docs?  How many thousands are in possession of USFS, Parks?

Too, up to individual Forests etc. to set what is required if even needed.

Ironically, I was starting to plan for a potential trip late summer to Isle Royale and saw they posted food safety information; not for bear but for wolf concern. This is what they’ve posted, implying that all the imaged containers are current IGBC.

And more interestingly, they require a 2 stage storage even when using the approved bear canisters.

I’m not understanding what they are needing.  Hang your canister?  Store the can in a food storage (bear bin) also?

C’mon! My Garcia bear can is a damned bomb-proof vault. I ain’t buying a new one. I’ll just skip Montana in the future.
