Apex 2.5 Quilt Question

A friend made me an Apex 2.5 Quilt with Argon .67 interior/exterior. I used it in my hammock this weekend with a 20° underquilt and was adequately warm with a forecast low of ~42°.

I’m going out again next weekend in the same general area and it looks like the same forecast. This time I’ll be sleeping on the ground with the Apex 2.5 quilt on top of a Women’s Neoair Pad (R3.9) in an MLD Superlight Bivy and a Duomid (if wind or rain is likely).

My question is: How does the insulation of a 20° UQ in a hammock relate to a R3.9 pad on the ground? Can I expect to be colder or warmer if the temperature is the same on this next trip?

I think you should be fine.  Obviously, over time you will figure out what the lowest temperature you’re comfortable at more accurately.

In a hammock the outside temperature of the air is the temperature outside the insulation.

When you’re on the ground, it offers a little insulation, and depending on weather in the previous days/weeks/months the ground will be at some temperature.  Also, there’s more thermal conduction through the ground, so initially it will be colder but will warm up after a few hours. The ground has thermal mass which takes a while to warm up.  I’ve measured the temperature of the ground underneath me adjacent to my pad, and it can be 20 F warmer than the air temperature.
