So I really like the idea of freeing up the middle of the Ultamid 2 from the pole. It’s one thing that’s attracted me to other mids like the duomid or LG Khufu. Does anyone know if you can do this with a Ultamid 2? I could buy a DPTE from MLD if needed and then buy long enough poles from Ruta Locura.

Any thoughts?

You would just need long enough poles. If you were going to buy two poles from Ruta Locura, I would purchase the proper length poles (adjustable). The DPTE does not really do anything. It is just an extension (2 carbon tubes) that the tips of your hiking poles fit into. I have a Locus Gear Hapi (not as tall or wide as the Ultamid2). I use these extensions that install directly into my trekking poles: https://www.backpackinglight.co.uk/shelter-accessories/YA112.html

I put caps on the end of my poles and skip the DPTE now. I do not find the DPTE to be as stable, but it works. One advantage of the DPTE is that it has a sleeve that fits over the two carbon tubes and has a hang loop to attach an inner net, but my tent has a hang loop at the top.

With my poles fully extended and lashed together, I can angle them to the edge of the floor so that there is considerable interior space in the Ultamid 2. It will stand just fine, though not perhaps in high winds. With an extra pair of lash straps you can do the same with your partner’s poles for an inverted V and greater strength.
