I have a WM Ultralight and was thinking instead of buying a quilt to just alter the sleeping bag into a quilt. Anyone done such an alteration? Any hints? Snags? Guides? Pictures?

May 17, 2016 at 5:24 pm #3403090It’s easy if you want to cut the entire zipper and zipper baffle off.
Cut the hood saving an extra 1″ for the tuck and sew.
I’ve wanted to say that I would do this for people, but everyone keeps wanting something miraculous with the zipper draft saved and a bunch of other things that you shouldn’t want out of the conversion.
Most are looking at saving all the benefits out of the $500 bag they want to convert. Â It won’t be that.
If you want it simple, go for it.
May 17, 2016 at 5:55 pm #3403101Simplest way to convert a sleeping bag into a quilt:
Step 1: Unzip sleeping bag.
BOOM. Done. Now you have a quilt with a sweet foot box. BONUS: you can convert it into a sleeping bag in pinch!

May 17, 2016 at 6:24 pm #3403114WM has good reputation and their bags have a good resale value. If you are set on a quilt you may be able to sell your WM Ultralight and buy a quilt of similar warm without having to lay out too much (if any) extra cash.
On the other hand, if you are not sure if a quilts is for you or you want to preserve the resale value of your WM Ultralight, maybe just roll tightly (and clamp down) the hood and then you can open up the bag and use it as a quilt with the zipper open.
I have a western WM Versalite for cold weather and a ZPacks “quilt” which is really a hoodless sleeping bag. I really like the flexibility of the ZPacks “quilt”, I have it open in quilt mode most of the time, but if things get a bit drafty and on the cold side, I can zip it up and keep more heat in. I like that both bags (as your WM Ultralight) have continuous baffles so you can “move” the down where you want it (kind off).
