Anybody with long-term experience with an Exped Flexmat Plus?

On some basic level, I’m the kind of person that really prefers a CCF pad for my backpacking trips because of their dependability.  However, that core understanding of myself ran into the harsh reality about 7 years ago that CCF pads would no longer work for me as an older (now 53) side sleeper.  I finally surrendered and got a Thermarest NeoAir Xlite.  I’ve been very happy with it and have had no problems.  However, I still worry about it malfunctioning on a trip and effectively ruining that trip for me (especially as the Xlite gets older).

Yesterday, I stumbled across the Exped Flexmat Plus. I’ve seen some reviews that its extra thickness makes it actually work for side-sleepers — once you get it broken in.  However, I’ve also seen some mentions that it quickly loses much of its thickness and therefore it quickly becomes unworkable for side-sleepers.  Color me confused.

Does anybody have any long-term reviews of this pad? I’m especially interested in hearing from side-sleepers and/or people in their 40s/50s/60s.

Thank you!

You may see in the reviews that the high points get pushed in, which I find truthful. It doesn’t seem to be a problem though. Perhaps that’s the breaking in part. I don’t think of it as deteriorating. I’ve only used it a few times without an inflatable on top. I can feel the bumps when I use it alone. I still find it more comfortable than a flat pad. A little more support. I cut my XL down into 3 parts consisting of a couple with 4 sections and one with 5 sections. I generally use the two 4’s with the lower one turned sideways. The lower part then is not as wide but it is a bit longer . I can also use one of pieces on the back to my chair. The part with 5 sections often gets left behind. I’m in my late 60’s and a side sleeper. I’m happy with the purchase. I’ve dealt with an Exped inflatable with blown baffles before. I think I had it for 10 years. I bought it off of eBay with no warranty. They were kind enough to send a free replacement. It was one of their seconds and also a duo mat instead of a single. That included a new Schnoozle. I  didn’t see any flaws at all. I was very pleased with the customer service.

That is very helpful. Thank you! I’m getting more and more tempted to try this pad out. :-)

As Terran Terran says, the break in is getting the tops of the points to break down some.  I have been using one for 5 years with a Prolite XS on top and it has been the solution to durable, comfortable side sleeping.  I use a 48′ length.  The one draw back is it it too bulky to carry inside the pack usually and I have to strap it on the top.  I am 68.

Thank you for another positive review.  Hoping to lay on one of these next week.
