I had some “Stimulus” money left over and had a chance to buy an older S2S Traveller in Extra Large at a good price. NOS at a 40% off flash sale.
I know it isn’t an UL bit of gear but I didn’t own a summer sleeping bag and this would I thought do double duty as a cuddle blanket for my wife and I if the summer nites became a little cool.
I finally sold the big -55C monster sleeping bag and don’t ever want to make the mistake of overbuying again for a trip that will probably never happen.
BUT
I still have the Nunatak overquilt with the 100GSM APEX insulation and I have considered layering the two together.
I’m asking as the whole layering insulation idea still confuses me a little and as I pass 70YO I seem to need a lot more insulation to sleep well than I did just 5 years ago.
The Nunatak would be rated as 10C comfort for a female
The Traveller is EN rated at 14C for a female. Experience tells me that I need to swap to a proper sleeping bag at 10C or I sleep poorly.
For now I have been assuming a 5C drop in comfort levels for every decade after 40YO and that adding the Traveller to the Nunatack overquilt would make up for my reduced metabolism
My mattress system is adequate for snow, being the S2S comfort plus.
How far off the mark am I with my approximations?
The answers will help me with how far I can push the limits on my old down filled winter bag after the last rejuvenation
