The mileage is impressive but if he wanted to call it the American perimeter trail he should have stuck to the perimeter as much as possible. He chopped off the entire eastern part of the US. He would have been better off using the Great American Loop as a template and just made it more thru-hike friendly by eliminating some backtracking.
