Hey all,

I’m wondering if there are lighter/more packable alternatives to the zlite sol and ridgerest solite pads that still have the aluminized coating, for use as a second foam pad in winter. Ideally I’d like to find something 1/4″-3/8″, and under 10oz in 20″-72″, for pairing with an Xtherm for temps down to 0F.

I found this – https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06XCWC6T9/

The 5.8oz listed weight sounds unlikely, but I’ve read some folks have had success with 1/4″ CCF pads paired with a high-R inflatable at these temps.

Anyone using something similar?

That weight is believable – I have a 1/4″ pad that is 24×71 which weighs 3.6 ounces. But whether the radiant barrier will do anything under an Xtherm which already has radiant barrier in it, I wonder. The 1/4″ of foam will help for sure, but as my pad shows, you can get the 1/4″ of foam for a lower weight. I have used my Xtherm only down into the teens; found it very nice.

Thanks Paul, do you remember where you got your pad?

I’ve read that having the highest R/inch layer (i.e. the foam) on top is actually warmest, though I imagine not as comfortable as having it under the air mat for many folks. I have generally used the foam as the bottom layer but switched this if I was cold. In either case I bet the aluminum layer makes a difference but maybe less so if it’s under the air mat? Hard to say because in the reverse, the xtherm reflective layers would deal with the same issue… Given the weight of your 1/4″ pad, I wonder if the aluminum layer on these is thicker/heavier than on the solite style pads, perhaps making it less efficient, but maybe also more durable. I hear the solite aluminum wears off over time.
