Alternatives for GaiaGPS and offline routing?

I’ve been pretty dissatisfied with the rate GaiaGPS fixes old bugs affecting their main product functions. Stuff like, searching for a feature and not being stuck on the previous feature you searched for. I have to swipe GaiaGPS out to force close it about one hundred times more frequently than I do for any other application.

The main thing I like about Gaia is the offline mobile application routing and ascent estimations, for in-field decision making. It’s especially useful with the slope angle overlay downloaded. That’s the main thing that keeps me using it.

I can’t seem to find a similar feature in CalTopo’s mobile application, or any others. Does anyone have good ideas about alternatives that have this?

If GaiaGPS could fix really irritating bugs once in a while (I’ve reported several to support@ over the last few years) I would be a lot more satisfied.

Caltopo reports that they are committed to improving their mobile app. Have you engaged with their tech support folks to get the features you need?

In reference to other options, sounds like you are using Gaia for backcountry skiing and/or climbing.  You might try posting in forums focused on those topics.

can you use caltopo to show where your GPS says you are on the topo map?

that’s the functionality of Gaia that’s really useful

and taking a track of the route you follow, so you can retrace your steps or look at it after a trip to see how far you’ve hiked

On my last trip all my high res downloaded topo maps disappeared.  There was still a low res topo map.

I’m just guessing that gaia automatically updated with a new version which for some reason killed my high res topo maps.

Fine, I just deleted all my downloaded maps and re-downloaded new high res maps.  Maybe the new versions were better than the old ones I downloaded several years ago.

On the trip where I lost the high res maps, I knew where I was going so I didn’t really need a topo map.

That happens with Avenza when I transfer to a new phone but never from a simple update yet. I’ve downloaded a whole range of maps with various scales for my immediate area. Used Gaia for a couple of years and liked it but glad I moved on before the changes.

I haven’t, although given the “offline routing” feature is in their FAQ I imagine they’re pretty well aware. I suppose I could write.

I’m not, mostly for off-trail hiking decision making here and there, figuring out whether some terrain looks passable. You can avoid a lot of granite cliffs that are too sharp and small for the contour map via the slope overlay, which does a decent job showing ridges.
