Alpha Direct Pants?

These look to be in stock.  Nothing special on design, simple drawstring for waist and and no cuffs on ankles which makes them very light.  I found them to be slightly oversized.

Just as a data point on what weight to get, I have pants in both 60 gsm and 120 gsm, and the 60’s are great for nice high mountain summer long johns and sleepwear. The 120’s are really warm, good for shoulder season stuff where it’s colder and the evenings/mornings may be long, but I found them too warm for Sierra summer use even up high, unless it’s an especially cold snap. I’d rate the 60 as about like a heavyweight or expedition weight long john, or 100 weight fleece. Really amazing warmth for the weight.

Erik, thanks for that link.  Size large is completely sold out, but I suppose I could pay the 1/2 ounce or so weight penalty and get the XL.  I think large would be more close fitting and therefore warmer.  Hmm.  Have to think about this.

Paul, have you tried the 90 gsm?  I was thinking that the 90 gsm would be the happy medium.

By the way, I’m getting pretty old these days, and I’m now sleeping cold.  A bit on the warm side would be a good thing for me.

I have not tried the 90, but as you say, might be the happy medium and more versatile, only an ounce more than the 60.

Senchi also does alpha direct pants.  Like many of the alpha direct producers, they make their stuff in batches, so they might not have them in stock. But Garage Grown Gear might have inventory.

Not Alpha, but Zpacks’ Octa bottoms are excellent. I have the Camp Pants (5 oz) and am considering the lighter and cooler Thermal Bottoms (3 oz).

I have tops in both AD90 and Octa and while each material has pros and cons I find them very close in warmth. If you are under a time constraint you may want to look at the Zack’s bottoms Ben references.

They make a couple different pant styles. I find them to be really nice. Appears to be a one man operation, that takes time off for thru hikes.

The Farpointe pants are really nice too. I currently own 6 Farepointe pants (different sizes) and one from Magnet. I plan to buy another from Magnet without the pockets this time. Can’t go wrong with either company.

One thing to note, is that Magnet manufacturers there garments so the Alpha Direct stretches vertically, not horizontally like the other companies.

Magnet seems very open to doing custom orders when I inquired this spring about an AD short sleeve shirt. I still need to arrange this with them.

I have the Octa pants and a couple of Octa hoodies from Zpacks. They don’t get used. The AD is superior for my body.

Gosh, forget the pants!! It is great to see Hikin’ Jim on BPL again. It has been a long time.

I don’t post much here these days. Jim has always been one of my favorite BPL people.

What’s the use case Jim? I have a pair of Magnet 120gms pants. While static under anything else they add incredible warmth. I tried hiking in them under Ferossi pants as well as just under some wind pants-wow-like a furnace when ambient temps were mid teens to low 20’s-way too much warmth.

Erik, thanks for the Farpoint link.  The pants look OK except for the fact they have no shell. They at the least need a double seat and double knees of light polyester fabric.

I have a pair of the Farpoints (2024 model) pants and great performance at a minuscule weight, so far, as sleep pants/protect my quilt.   Also used a wee bit as hiking insulation under shell pants and their performance was great, though I run hot enough I’m not worried about dampness.  Alpha dries really quick.

Cons: Need to baby alpha-fleece.   It’s pretty weak abrasion and cut wise, though very stretchy.  If I feel dry skin snag against an alpha sleeping sock, it’s “uh-oh”time (let alone cacti, thorns, .. even “Velcro”).
