Hi everyone,

I thought I should share some insight on Alpaca. I’ve read in other forums and many people have the belief that Alpaca sweaters are heavy and too warm. Please note I do work in this type of industry so I thought I should share some knowledge. Alpaca wool is mostly used for fashion and rarely for sports, that is actually one of the reasons why I decided to developed Alpaca fleeces for hiking, etc. Many companies use different methods to create their finally clothing which can effect the weight and warmth. We work with Alpaca farmers in Peru only and we were able to make mid layers of 420 g and base layers of 230 g. The textile strength is quite stronger and compared to Merino, it is ever stronger. At the same time Alpaca is also softer than cashmere. However, like any other wool is does itch; however, Alpaca is naturally hypoallergenic and lanolin free. if you want more details on our alpaca mid layers and base layers you can visit my page and google arms of andes or feel free to ask me directly.

Melissa, you should post of link of some sort so that people can read and see more about the benefits of alpaca. I have some alpaca out layers and wear a very thin, wicking next to skin layer underneath. My baby alpaca pullover itches about the same as a 240g Icebreaker shirt. Smartwool feels smoother and less itchy. Ibex was in between – RIP Ibex – they made great merino gear.

Cheers,
Bill in Roswell, GA
