When Alltrails introduced their new “Peak” top tier, they made it a total PITA to modify existing custom routes or make new ones and even threatened to drop the capability all together on Plus unless ponying up $$$ for Peak. I probably have over a hundred customs routes in my lists so this was a real kick to the chops.
Alltrails had a come back to sanity moment (below). I’m not convinced Custom Routes is an improvement over the old method, but this walk-back is a step in the right direction.
- When we launched our new Peak membership earlier this year, we didn’t get everything right. We launched new features, but also retired Advanced Conditions and our desktop map builder around the same time. Those shifts meant Base and Plus members lost access to functionality they cared about. That was a mistake, and we’re making it right with the following updates, available now:
- Custom Routes is free on desktop and will replace the previous map builder in January. We’re also improving Custom Routes with waypoints and shareable trail pages, launching later this month.
- Trail Conditions is included in your Plus membership, providing weather, daylight, and more on every trail. By the end of this month, Trail Conditions will get even better, with new detailed ground conditions information.
I won’t be giving up my Caltopo subscription any time soon. Trust takes years to build and moments to lose. Companies constantly lose sight of this.
