SO yeah, I’ve mentioned this book in posts over the years but I think it deserves a dedicated post.

This is a thin paperback on both backcountry ski tips and winter camping. About 3/2 of the book is on how to winter camp in the backcountry. It is illustrated with cartoonish drawings but there is a lot of information in those drawings, at least as much as in the text. This book is one you will re-read several times and recommend to new winter campers and backcountry skiers.

I’ve now experienced dyslexia! I meant 2/3, not “3/2”.

Even with all the latest winter/4 season gear we now have available this book is still very relevant on all its advice.  And if you have never winter camped this little book is invaluable.

I picked this book up about a month ago after seeing you recommend it. I read the whole thing in an evening! Great information and one I’ll be showing to other friends I take winter backpacking in the BWCA next year!

An invaluable classic for getting into winter backcountry tripping.

It’s a solid book and I’ve owned a copy since right after the current edition was put out, but it really needs to be updated. BC ski gear, techniques, and best practices have changed DRAMATICALLY (for the better) over the past 19 years since the last edition was published.

Ya I definitely used it as a jumping off point. I’ve found that forums like reddit, telemark talk, and BWCA.com are great supplements. Still trying to figure out a good ski setup. If anyone has any suggestions for 80% flat/gentle terrain (frozen lake travel) I’m all ears. Currently looking at the fischer traverse 78 as a happy medium ski between efficient kick and glide with a bit of float.
