I’m going to order the wildside kit too this week. I think I prefer the way it goes together over the calderas in particular not having the dovetail joint. That joint cut my hand yet again the other day, for I think the tenth time now. The wildside join seems safer. Guess I’ll find out…

Ive never really rocked anything smaller than a bot 700. But that was always big enough. I’ve been experimenting at home with my old bpl 550 mug with cooking lately (never really used it in action apart from as a mug). So I feel more confident now in the Toaks 700 sizing, for me.

Adam, thanks for originally mentioning this kit. It strikes me as the next evolution of the Caldera.

If you are using the toaks 700 pot light pot that both trail Designs and Wildside make a cone for the Trail Designs Sidewinder stove you have a one piece cone that fits in the pot, no taking apart or putting together a cone like the Wildside, how is that an evolution?

It’s a “minor evolution” because the Wildside curls up around the interior perimeter of the pot, leaving a LOT more room for the alcohol burner, fuel container, etc. The Sidewinder (I have two of these) lay in the center of their respective pots, eating up a fair bit of space.

At the end of the day, both are great systems, and I like both.

did you sell your Wildside? I can still fit my stove and lighter etc. inside my pot with my Traildesigns stove and they don’t rattle around.

I’ve been using alcohol stoves for over half a century.

Used commercial ones. Used cottage ones. Made my own.

These days I’m using small shallow tins filled with ceramic insulation. Simple, stable, failsafe, featherweight, extremely compact, reasonably efficient. You need a damper to extinguish them – just a circle of aluminium sheet. Screw on the lid and you can transport with any unused fuel.

I use a bigger one for boiling and a small one for simmering.  Total weight – too small to bother measuring.

Best used in combination with a cone windshield/potholder system.

My search is over.

If you can find one, I recommend the Zelph Starlyte (modified or not).  Not made anymore.

As always for anything, always buy an extra cause good gear is never made forever…
