Air Mattress Company Startup with Included Pillow

I’m working on a small company start up that would make the mattress I personally like. Wanting to get some feedback from folks to see if there is a market for this.

The design right now is for a 375 to 450 gram air mattress that is 3/4 length long and includes a pillow. The idea is to keep the pillow from running away in the middle of the night by already having it attached to the mattress. I’ve never missed the longer mattresses, hence the 3/4 length. Also, the shaping of the mattress reduces conduction so heat loss is less than other designs. And of course I’m trying to get the weight down and competitive with more expensive products. Finally, its looking like the price would be around 55 to 65 dollars.

I see a lot of people going to pillows in their sleeping bag hood, but as a side sleeper………? Actually I use an elephant foot bag so I use my jacket as my hood. Anyway, would love to hear thoughts from people.

Its interesting.. I personally only use regular/wide pads or Large size.. and I even would be intrigued if there was a slightly wider version then what’s available from thermarest, without jumping to a double wide!

This is a great idea. Ever since the ensolite days, I’ve been a fan of 3/4 length pads. I’m currently using a small Nemo Tensor and a Sea to Summit pillow. I’ve rarely felt a need to have a pad under my knees and lower legs.

Thanks Adrian and Dirtbag!

Yeah, I would like to offer a wide and regular. But which to do first? Or maybe I should just go a bit wider than standard.

What are your thoughts on the pillow being a part of the mattress? I’m a side sleeper, so getting a pillow tall enough on a pad is……you can’t. I kept knocking it off the pad. My current setup is a mattress that uses an included pillow. I add a stuff sack with rain jackets to get my head up even higher. The material on this pad is too heavy though. So I’m talking to manufactures about other options.

If you want something truly better, don’t make it an air pillow.  Air pillows are almost hard as rocks, regardless of how much or little air is in them.  For a side sleeper they plaster one’s ear against one’s head in a painful, sweaty way.

Instead,  how about a built-in pouch I can stuff my own puffy into?  If I can’t punch my pillow into the shape I want, it’s not a pillow.

X2 on a sleeve for a fleece/pillow.  Right now, I use an inflatable pillow wrapped in a fleece, and that’s ubercozy, but it can move around a lot.

X2 on a slightly-wide version as well; just enough room for splayed elbows and knees, please.

I wouldn’t be a buyer. I don’t have any trouble with my pillow, and that sounds pretty heavy for a 3/4 length pad (NeoAir Xlite is 240g with a good R-value), so I don’t see much of an advantage in what is already an extremely competitive space. And based on the low price you are quoting, I’m guessing that the R-value won’t be significant, just an air mattress. Maybe add some adhesive velcro to an existing pad/pillow, like S2S does.

Years ago I used a Thermarest  3/4 pad and thought the discomfort was worth the weight and space savings.

Then I got a Neoair and realized I had been fooling myself.

As a side sleeper I do find the idea of a pocket that a pillow, etc.  goes into interesting but my initial reaction to an integrated inflatable pillow is skepticism.

As mentioned above, 450g doesn’t seem competitive weight wise.

I don’t find pillows to be a problem but maybe I’m just lucky. 450g might be ok for some people if it included the pillow though and the pad was comfortable and warm.

I may be an outlier but the thing I want is a wide/short pad. Gimme 23–25” of width in a ~48” pad and I’d be thrilled. I’m tempted to buy a wide NeoAir and cut it down but it concerns me to buy such and expensive pad only to void the warranty before I use it.

I am a side sleeper. Wide shoulders. Prefer a 25″ wide pad. Tried a dozen pillows from premium brands and asian copies. S2S Premium in a large has 5″ rise. Foam layer far more comfortable on my ears. No other pillow works for me. Do wish it had tabs for using elastic cord to hold to mat. S2S Pillow Lock is fine if you only use one pad.

As for pads, used a Xlite long X 25″ wide cut down to 70″. Old valve. Easy to cut down.

Hello Timothy,  I recently received a patent on an inflatable sleeping pad design that reduces the effort needed to blow up a full pad by 75%.   I would love to get your input on my design.  If you can make me a prototype, that would be awesome.  Please contact me through the Packa website if interested. Thanks, Eddie
