I’m putting together my 2 sons backpacks and I’m currently stuck on rain gear. They are 9 & 11 so I was wondering if anyone has recommendations on what to use. I was thinking of using an adult poncho that way it can cover them along with their pack and they won’t need to carry a backpack cover. If anyone has had success with this did you use the cheap thin ones or is there a thicker/sturdier version? I’m trying to keep their pack weight as little as possible. I will be carrying the all my gear and a bigger tent and all of the food in my Granite Gear Crown 2 pack so my pack weight will be maxed at 35lbs. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an adult-sized poncho that I lent to a ten-year old for a school trip where he had to bring rain gear (cabin in the woods for a couple of nights). I checked that it wasn’t long enough to trip him, but can’t report any more about success because he never needed it.
In April, my tallish 11 yo niece came with us on her first backpacking trip. I bought from Walmart the Coleman Camino Trail youth Eva poncho. She was happy with it after a full day of drizzle and light rain. It seemed a tad more durable than others and didn’t have a plastic smell that I have noticed in others. Weight is 5.45 oz. She wore an old REI youth Trekker external frame pack.
Check out IKEA They have proofed nylon hooded ponchos in a youth/kids size.
Supposed to be adults but way too small for any adult i know

I’ll check them all out. I got them the REI Co-op Tarn 40. So it will have to cover them and the pack. I will probably be buying them EE Bags that they will have for a longtime. I’ll just tie a piece of paracord up some so it will fit them. I can’t see wasting money on youth bags when a normal bag can work.
