[Not really “make” your own gear. Rather “modify”…]

My tent (Nemo Hornet) uses small velcro tabs in order to secure the fly to the pole set. I practically never use them (i.e. I just drape the fly over the pole set), largely because I’d have to spend an inordinate amount of time to set/unset the tabs.

So the plan is to semi-permanently attach clips, similar to those used to secure the body to the pole set, using the velcro tabs. Leave them attached to the fly and clip the fly to the pole.

I assume that plastic clips are benign addition, since they are used to secure the tent body. However, when I asked Nemo about sourcing clips, their reply suggested that this wasn’t a good idea and would void the warranty — I believe they assumed that I would the fly if I were to glue of sew clips.

Anyhow, if you have wise words for me, I am all ears.

Any untested modification that’s out of their control might void their warranty. Not giving you the go ahead protects them legally. It’s probably their standard answer. If done wrong, it may cause stress on the poles. I think you’re smart enough to figure that out. Don’t ask, don’t tell. I doubt you’ll ever need the warranty. If you do need the warranty and it’s unrelated to your modification, I wouldn’t hesitate to seek restitution. I only say that because I believe you’re smart enough and honest enough to know the difference.

With that said, it may increase the distance off of the pole and may have more give than Velcro would. It might create stress when the wind blows and if nothing else, be very annoying. It may work well. You may be very pleased or they might end up in a drawer for the next 20 years. Not of use to anybody else but too good to throw away. If you don’t try, you’ll always be curious. IOW IDK.
