I’m a volunteer SAR member up in Canada. I am ready to have a devoted SAR pack rather than pulling all my stuff out and putting it back every time. I was listening to the SARcast podcast out of the UK, and they mentioned chest packs were great. Then I remembered Aarn packs! Do any of you use Aarn body packs for SAR applications? If so, which do you recommend?
My SAR leader recommended a 45 L pack for the summer and 65 for the winter. I haven’t decided, but I already have a 65 L pack.
I think I’d like a pack with the pelvic form hip belt, so that limits my options to the largest packs. I’m slightly confused about the Mountain Magic, which seems like a good size: do the new ones have the pelvic form hip belt or not? I’m also not sure if they are 44 L or 37; I’ve seen both floating around. I am 5’11, but I apparently have a long torso (19 in), so I’m limited to a size large or maybe medium.
I might also go for a Peak Aspiration, which seems bomb-proof (but maybe a bit too heavy). The Aspiration might also be too large for a SAR day pack, especially with the 18 L balance pockets. Maybe I will just have one giant pack for both day and overnight call outs…or maybe not :)
I would also assume having the largest balance pockets (the 18 L Expeditions) would be best for SAR due to the ease of grabbing 1st aid gear and other supplies; or am I wrong?
I live by the Rockies, and most call outs would be in fields, forested foothills, and the occasional alpine rescue on front range mountains.
I would like to order one, but most of the packs are currently sold out from the US store. Any stores in Canada that sell them? Therefore, I am considering just getting a universal balance bag so that I can be ready for the busy hiking season as soon as possible. It would pair with my Osprey Escapist 25, so it would hopefully be an acceptable size (37 L total) for day call outs.
