This summer I had the honor of helping a hiking partner carry her pack up and down some steep parts of the trail. What worked best was leaving my 15 lb pack on, and carrying her 18 lb pack in front of me. I slipped my arms through her straps, and carried both packs at once. It felt really good having a balanced load.

I have to say I really like my very lightweight and comfortable Arc Blast Z Packs.

The full Arn pack seems maybe more than I need, but what about the balance bags?

These are two bags that are clipped onto the sternum strap and hip belt.
They say they are worth their weight if the total weight carried is at least 7 kg.

Well, I carry more than that going in, but less than that going out.

Has anyone had experience with these $89 Balance Bags?

I don’t know about those pockets but I use a similar size on an Aarn pack. (expedition pockets)

I have had maybe 5-6 kg in those (mostly water) but often down to 3kg or so (water /nuts/first aid/camera/hat/toilet kit/spare glasses/gloves)

I like them , apart from the balance,  for the ease of access

I haven’t used the Aarn bags but have used a front bag to balance things for about 20 years.   I like it.  Only takes about 5 lbs to make a big difference for me.

I am almost packed (for 2 days /two nights) so I took out all the bits from the pockets just to see how close I was.

I had 2.570 kg in there , so that is about 5.6 lbs.

That would be about the minimum for me in there because I usualy have more water and trail food  (at the start) but yes it already does make a difference.

I made something equivalent several years ago.  I don’t recall weights or volumes, but the did balance nicely.  After a long weekend trip I decided I didn’t like having all that bulk up front.  It was a bit harder to see my foot placement and made it much harder to squat down to tie my shoes as the pouches occupied the space my knee and thigh needed to go.
