Earlier this month a friend and I completed a thru-hike of the Dixon/Wilson Southern Sierra High Route (SoSHR) (http://www.adventurealan.com/southern-sierra-high-route-soshr-guide/).
We made a youtube recapping the amazing trip here:

Since I’ve just left home for grad school in NY, having grown up with the Sierras, I felt it was really important to have one last incredible trip in the Sierras. We thru-hiked Roper’s classic Sierra High Route last year (https://backpackinglight.com/forums/topic/106650/) and after much thought, we decided there couldn’t be a better follow-up to that unsurpassable level of high route immersion in the range of light than the SoSHR.

We set a challenging pace for ourselves last year on the SHR (12.5 days) so we decided to take a more leisurely pace this year on the SoSHR (6.5 days). Due to heavy snow in the Palisades and an altitude setback, we couldn’t complete Mt. Sill. This was a huge disappointment to me, since I’ve been dying to complete it since I passed it on the SHR last year. We made up for it a bit with a short side trip up to the east ridge of Mt. Russell at the end of the trip. We’ll just have to come back for another trip to the Palisades and do Sill.

The concept behind the SoSHR is awesome: finish the highest and finest 100 miles of crest stretching from the northernmost 14ers, in the Palisades, to the southernmost 14er, Mt. Langley, that the SHR neglects, while staying true to the spirit and vision of Roper’s original concept. Plus I’m a huge fan of Alan Dixon. He puts forth incredibly high quality route ideas and info all things backpacking, and he’s super kind as well.

I’ve posted a full day-by-day trip report with photos here: https://austinlillywhite.wordpress.com/trip-reports/247-2/
