Queston for Ye Titanium Mug/Pot Users

I find that my titanium mug/pot is often coated with a dull, whitish / light grayish sheen and a sort of powdery substance after boiling water a few times. This stuff can't be rinsed or wiped away completely with water, but can be removed with C-L-R or Lime Away. Surprisingly, even when filled and rinsed with Brita-filtered water, the white stuff still coats the pot! I've never seen this with alum pots, just with titanium ones (e.g. Snow Peak 600 and 700, and FireLite 550).

Anyone knows what this is? Some of kind of reaction between titanium and water (even filtered water)? Might it be harmful to the human body — in addition to just being unsightly?

It sounded like lime until you mentioned you were using filtered water. If it's not that, then I'm at a complete loss. Have you thought about testing it with bottled water just to see if it happens then as well?

A Brita water filter doesn't take hardness out of the water. It requires reverse osmosis filters or ion exchange softeners to remove calcium carbonate.

Sounds like hardness to me. The fact that dilute acid (CLR) removes it, pretty much confirms this. Don't know why you don't see it on aluminium pots though. Seems like you should.

Titanium is used to repair broken bones and as screws and plates in the human body. I think the medical community has confirmed that ti is safe. I'm not worried about health risks at all.

Thanks, gentlemen, for your quick responses — and for confirming that titanium is indeed safe for humans. I will play around with my pot again — this time boiling and rinsing with distilled water and see what happens. :)

As the keeper of a large planted tropical aquarium, I can confirm, it's definitely water hardness – perhaps you didn't see it with your aluminum pots because the aluminum was a bit lighter in color.

Ben, I get white calcified deposits on my nonstick aluminum pots as well; different water source of course but I think it is mineral based.
