I'm looking at my winter day hiking/snowshoeing/skiing pack (which happens to look an awful lot like my elk hunting pack :) ) and got thinking about an uplanned night out. I have a AMK Thermolite bivy, one of AMK's newer "utility blankets" and an XL contractor bag (3×7'). I always carry a mid-weight down parka (OR Incandescent w/ ~ 7.5 oz of fill) and was thinking I might be better off w/ a waist high elephant foot bag and throwing in my eVENT bivy. I'd probably keep the contractor bag as it works well for gathering duff, boughs, etc; split it would work well for the top of snow trench and in a pinch it's big enough you could crawl into it. I'd probably ditch the AMK blanket and bivy, the "blanket" weighs ~ 11 oz, the AMK bivy ~ 8 oz. The eVENT bivy is 13 oz and my guess (just guessing) that a 4-ish foot elephant bag w/ 5-6 oz of down would be in the 10 oz range (maybe less???)- I'd only be up a couple of ounces and would think quite a bit warmer (and probably more dry w/ the eVENT bivy). Volume would increase by a little, but wouldn't think too much.
I'm not looking for a dedicated sleep system, but trying to minimize the "hurt" of an unplanned night out :)
Thoughts?
