I love salomon trail runners and winter boots. My favorite pair or salomons for past winter trips,(GTX 3D chassis), I think thats what they are, which I used for winter backpacking/snowshoeing here in NY, well, they do not make it anymore and I need a bigger size! So, any recommendations for which I shall try? I have the Toundra winter boot, but I think it may be overkill for backpacking and snowshoeing. I could use them, but Id rather go more with a sneaker kind of then clunky boots. I also have trail runners, XScream, i believe, but I'm not sure about using those for wintery conditions here in NY. Could I use trail runners with something like the 40 below neoprene overboots? Should I invest my money in those and try them out? Any ideas? Thanks..

I was looking for the same last season and decided on the Nytros. My feet run cold, so I needed a boost even for everyday city use. I didn't want to jump up to the bulk and weight of the Toundras. I've now used the Nytros for some backpacking, snowshoeing, and lots of day hikes. I think mine were around 40oz for the pair, but the sole is flexible and the fit around the ankle is snug enough that I don't notice the weight like I do with an old pair of Sorel Caribous. I even went for a 2 mile run in them this week when I was running late for work in a blizzard.
They've kept my feet warm down to -10F, but get sweaty above 20F. I've been looking at the Salomon X Ultra Mids for something even lighter on the bike, city use, and warmer winter hiking.
I have the X-Screams as well. Personally I don't use them in the winter since I bought mine to be a tight fit. In my experience the cleats have clogged with mud and snow easily. I don't think the cut around the ankle and the lacing would be a great match for taller ankles, either. But, if you have them already – just try it!

I have a pair of the Salomon X Ultra Mid GTX boots (309067).
They are very light and very comfortable, but they have one serious flaw. They leak after only a small amount of use.
I've only worn them about six times and suspect something has failed in the toe box.
Last time I was out for a bit of a hike, the snow gave way under me and my foot was ankle deep into some water for a few seconds.
I ended up with a wet foot for the rest of the day.
From what I've been reading, this seems to be common with Salomon boots.
I've seen a lot of reviews from the UK for this particular model, and they all talk about the boots leaking.
Mine are still under warranty and will likely be going back soon, except I've got a hike coming up soon and will need them.
You might want to try, if you're going to go the trail runner route, a pair of Salomon Snowcross – integrated gaiter, goretex, and screwed bottoms for grip in slippery conditions. I like my pair, though I tend to use them for trail running and day hikes, but I have winterbackpacked with trail runners before, using overboots. I found the overboots a bit annoying, prefer just to use gaiters to stop snow.

Yours is the first report I've read about this issue. I haven't leaking problems with my Nytros even while wading in running water, but that's a different boot. I should also note that Salomon customer service was great to me when I busted the lacing system on a previous pair.
I did the JMT in Salomons, splashed through many creeks and had no leaking problems. Just sayin'…
I was out again this past weekend, walking through short, wet grass. Very comfortable and lightweight boots, but once again my feet got wet. I'm returning them to the retailer and having them sent back to Salomon under warranty, since they are not even a year old yet.
Funny you found this post as I just refered to it this morning. I actually went with a pair of Inov8 Roclites 318 GTX trail runners for my winter hikes and just yesterday ordered myslef the -40 overboots which I was referencing to. So this coming winter will be my tests how it all works out!
I returned the boots to the retailer where I had purchased them. They were sent back to Salomon, who confirmed they were definitely leaking. Credit note for the original purchase price. Now to find another pair of lightweight water proof hiking boots.
