I bought some Coughlans fuel tabs to play with a few weeks ago. Liked them and dropped the tabs into a sandwich bag that I stored in my cup along with the stove and windscreen.

This weekend, I open the cup and (this is was odd to me) it smelled like old fish. Pungent and heavy.

I don't know if it's the residue at the bottom of the stove or the hexamine reacting to the plastic. I'm sure it wasn't the turkey pan windscreen since I used a new pan for that.

Any suggestions about what it could be?

That is typical of Esbit style fuel. That fact alone turns some people off but others don't find it offensive (or worth the trade off).

Made me go sniffing around. Don't know what to tell you, because none of mine have more than a slight odor.
I ditched Esbit because it stunk the entire room even when triple bagged, but the Coghlan's Hexamine tabs that I have don't smell much. Have to literally hold the bag up to my nose to smell anything.
Mine are in Ziploc sandwich and snack bags, respectively, kept in a plastic container with stove-related stuff, and in my mug with windscreen and stove like yours.
I've had them since last May.
