I just did the NOLS Wilderness First Responder course. Absolutely excellent, I thoroughly recommend it if you can ever find the time. NOLS has a book just called "Wilderness Medicine", now in its 5th edition. Available on Kindle, so you can have it loaded onto your smartphone if needed on the trail.
Paul Auerbach's MEDICINE FOR THE OUTDOORS is also worth having, also available for Kindle.
Obviously a book is no substitute for coursework though.
