Both my Scarp 2 and Moment DW flys can be pitched W/O the inner tent. Most newer double wall tents these days can do this.
The fly makes a fast-to-pitch "tarp" that is usually quite wind-worthy. Yeah, most require that you carry a pole or two but some, like the TT Stratospire 1 & 2 only need your hiking poles.
So why buy a tarp when your tent fly will do?
And, another advantage I see to the tarptents is that their flies are able to be pitched lower to the ground than most regular double wall tents.
What about those times when you want to pitch a flat tarp high and wide, as a sun shade, or to allow standing room underneath if there is gentle rain falling straight down? or mostly vertical as a wind blocker?
I have a big 10×12 hex tarp that came with a hennessy hammock. It's really too heavy to not get laughed at here (24oz!) But we always bring it group camping as a big awning tarp..
I've used awning tarps in canoe camping and car camping for dining flys and was damn glad I did in sunny hot or rainy weather.
But this thread is to remind folks they don't always need to rush out and buy a specialized tarp B/C many tent flys will do the same thing.
Who can forget it?!? I pitch mine every morning
