It's easier recovering when you are
younger.

Yes indeed.

Yes, just don't go any heavy lifting for six weeks or so. Basically, nothing that makes you tense your abdomen. Don't be afraid to walk a bit, though. You don't want to just be a couch potato and get a DVT or pneumonia.

1) Everything seems to tens my abdomen… sitting down, standing up, bending over, sneezing, coughing, clearing my throat, blowing my nose… etc, etc, etc…. and just about everything hurts :( …. one week out from surgery now… had kinda expected it to hurt less from what I had been reading…

2) DVT ?????
(love this brave new world of abbreviations… )

Billy, all those things that cause you to tense your abdomen… don't do that.

Just get out and walk around the block, and you will be good in no time.

Besides, this gives you more motivation to reduce the weight of your backpack even more for summer.

DVT = Deep Vein Thrombosis. Blood clot in a vein deep inside the anatomy, usually in the leg. IMO not a serious risk from a few weeks on the couch, though some of us have issues like Factor V Leiden that elevate the risk.

so are you the one whose father gave him a gift after hernia repair, a lottery ticket, was worth $7 million?

if there's no answer, it must have been you…

Old post but my Google search lead me here. I’ve got double indirect inguinal hernia. No real pain or lump (yet). Doesn’t hurt to run but when I’ve tried pushups planks or sit-ups it gets real sore in lower abdomen. That pain made me think I had a groin strain. Think it’s safe to backpack if I don’t go on too strenuous a route (that’s a challenge for me) or keep pack weight very light (buy all ultra/DCF because it’s for my health!)? Waiting on surgery but looks like they’re booked through summer.

I’d ask the doc.  I had an inguinal repair (right side) in Apr 2001 and I completed an easy weekend backpacking trip a few weeks prior without incident.  But followed specific guidelines, weight/distance/challenge.  My doc knew I was fit and backpacked regularly and I got a “i don’t recommend it but if you are hellbent, then…”

Once I had the surgery I was good to go without limitations for my annual late summer hike in the Sierra.  Mend time was about 3 months, though I had, for about 5 years a tearing sensation when lifting heavy loads with certain twisting motions.  These didn’t limit me, but did elict a curse word outburst or two.

But short answer:  ask your doc.
