Hey folks, I am food planning for the PCT and see that many people add olive oil to their meals.

I'm curious why powdered butter isn't mentioned more often, as a lightweight substitute for increasing fat and calorie content. I've searched a few forums and found a couple of mentions…. just curious about eating it daily, anyone have experience, is it nasty?

I use powdered butter in minute amounts in various recipes for trail food, get it from Packit Gourmet.

Olive Oil is easier, needs no reconstitution. .4 fl oz (about 1 tablespoon) has 120 calories. 14 grams of saturated fat.

The butter powder i get from Packit has 15 calories per 1/2 tsp serving, 10 from the single gram of saturated fat.

If you're trying to pack minimal bulk, with maximum calories, the winner is clear.

Butter powder is great for taste as well – it gives a depth if you use it with oil :-)

Honestly, just bring butter in a jar, like an old peanut butter jar or coconut oil for that matter. the 9 cal/gram easily justifies the weight of the container vs the 4 cal/g of a carb or protein. butter lasts days even in summer as long as it isnt exposed to direct sun light for hours on end. even then you can still eat it, it just might have a 'cheesy' aroma to it.
