I am planning to purchase an Enlightened Equipment Accomplice quilt (20 degree) for my wife and I to use on our upcoming PCT thru hike. I am now vacillating between going with a long and regular length. I am 5'10" (160lbs) and my wife is 5'4" (and slim).

Tim (owner of EE) tells me that the regular would come up to about my nose and the long would be a little over my head. I've bugged Tim enough with my questions, so I was looking for some advice from those of you who might have tried out different length quilts.

I suppose the options are:

1. Regular length + dedicated insulated hoods

2. Regular length + just our regular fleece hats (would this be warm enough?)

3. Long length + dedicated insulated hoods (would this be overkill?)

4. Long length + just our regular fleece hats

I generally like having more material to bundle up with when it comes to blankets, though I don't have any experience with UL quilts. I can see how a longer quilt could be nice (more cozy, more warmth around your neck, ability to throw it over your head in a pinch) but could also be a liability (heavier, could be less heat efficient with more quilt to heat, etc.).

It's tough because I don't have any regular versus long quilts to try out in person, so I kind of just have to make the right decision blind (and I have to get it right the first time since lead times are so long and an exchanged quilt wouldn't get back to us before we leave in April).

I would tend to err on the side of getting a long, since I never hear anyone complaining around here about their quilt being too long, but I commonly hear people wishing they got a longer one. Maybe this isn't representative? I'm just not sure.

Anyone care to weigh in? Any insights are much appreciated. Thanks!

I'm about 6'3" and actually use our Regular length in most cases. If you're a side sleeper and curl up at all, the Regular will still cover your head anyway.

My preferences is to not size up, as covering your head gets rid of some of the ease of getting in and out of the quilt, and tends to be more drafty besides since you're bypassing the neck enclosure, which is a big part of blocking drafts at the top (esp. on the Accomplice). Keeping your head in there will also keep a lot of the moisture inside your quilt, some of which will work its way into the down.

Personally I would stick to the size that will easily wrap around your neck with a few inches to spare in the foot box but not a lot of extra length. Other wise you may be trying to heat up too much extra airspace. With EE's strap system, neck snap (at least on the single models) and draw cord the quilts seal around the neck with very little tucking involved. On the other hand I wouldn't want something too short with my feet bottoming out and compressing the end of the foot box. I'm 5'8" and my regular, regular enigma fits easily. Not sure how long the Accomplice is. YMMV of course.

Also having tried a hat and a balaclava I prefer the full coverage of the balaclava in colder temps. Something that runs the entire length of your neck. Having the quilt cinch strap snug around the balaclava nicely seals in all the warm air with no gaps and is super comfy around your neck with the draw cord cinched tight.

I only have experience with the single models, but would expect it to apply to the Accomplice similarly.

I am 6’1″, 215 lbs and own two Reg/Wide EE quilts (30* Revelation and 10* Enigma). Both fit me perfectly, i.e. with the neck closure snapped behind my neck and the drawcord pulled close my feet are at the bottom of the footbox without any compression of the down. The sides tuck under me in a very natural manner and I can roll over with very little effort to avoid drafts. I normally use a PDHE Cap 4 beanie cap under a PDHE Cap 4 Balaclava and am very happy. When it gets really cold I add my UL puffy to the mix, mostly for the hood.

I agree with Peter, and suggest you get the size that EE recommends, which sounds like a Reg. One of the best things about EE is their guarantee. If you decide that the recommended size isn’t quite right you can easily exchange it for one that is.

Both quilts will do. I think you would be happier with the long, if it fits into your weight limits. How many extra snacks is a good nights sleep worth.

I'm 5'6", right on the border of Short and Reg. I got the Reg Revelation. Next time I'll get the Short.

I think a 5'4" person in a Long could be too much unless you really needed it.
