Hello,

My spouse and I are considering taking a few years to travel. We were wondering what people did for insurance in this situation? I was referred to a high level deductible plan, and now I wondering if this is the best route.

Thanks in advance!

EDIT : found another thread with relevant information. Thanks to all that replied

What exactly are you doing? Which trail? What are you trying to insure?

A rider on an existing medical insurance policy would be all you need in California.

World travel is a different thing – some countries have universal health care, others (Asia, Africa) it would be a less straightforward endeavor.

Domestic travel, PCT possibly AT.

Looking for emergency coverage mainly. We both have great benefits currently, what is a rider?

Thanks for the quick response.

a rider is additional insurance (that rides on top of your base insurance) for particular needs. Needs like medical evacuation from a wilderness area or coverage in foreign countries. Once you have base insurance the riders are often not that expensive.

Will you be quitting your job and losing your current benefits for this travel? If so, look no further than Obama Care. They have you covered.

No worries — you were probably out hiking when the previous thread ran. ;^)

It was just easier to re-direct than to re-create!
