Overnight temps for me will range from 40-70F. When it's in the upper half of the range (55-70), no big deal I can just wear my coolmax daytime hiking socks, but for the lower half, I'm looking for recommendations.

My priorities are weight and warmth first, cost a far 2nd.

Thanks!

For weight + warmth, it's hard to beat Goose Feet down socks. I usually carry a dedicated sleep sock (a thin DeFeet wooleater that I can wear the last day) and the GF. That's a great combo unless you also need something to walk around in.

down booties, no comparison. I also have goose feet down socks…..I'll never take them off.

darn tough. mid-weigh ankle socks have served me well. and I have cold-triggered restless leg syndrome (though less so when hiking – stands to logic!)

I use my Darn Tough socks and my goosefeet depending on the temp. Depending upon how long I'm out for, I have a dedicated pair of socks I wear at night to limit how funky my bag gets.

short cotton running socks. I find it is best to have my feet warm before going to bed then the socks just help keep them that way. going to bed cold already isn't fun.

Apparently it's impossible to sleep if your feet are cold, you may know this already! I'm with the whole goose foot down booties, though I also use a half litre platypus as a hot water bottle, (living dangerously maybe with a down quilt! and when weight isn't such an issue I use lightweight wool socks hand knitted by a friend, or fleece socks, or a pair of silk sock liners, or injinji socks. Basically almost anything to hand, or rather foot.

I would look at Enlightened Equipment synthetic booties. Using a down bootie is not good it a.) your feet are at all wet and b.) if you perspire through your feet. The down will collapse pretty quickly.

I start using the down booties around 40 or below. Warmer than that, I use my spare clean dry pair of wool socks. Cold is perhaps a subjective thing…. The Acorn socks are light and toasty as well, tho not on a par with down booties.

A hot water bottle goes a long way to warm up the feet when there's a cold nip in the air.

Range 40-60 °F:

One of the two pairs of veeeery loose fleece "tube" type sock as given away by Korean Air in Economy class.
No double-duty, purely sleep socks. Worth it. I combine these with my "spare" pair of DarnToughs if below 40 at night.

Probably 40 nights per pair thus far, still going strong.

Plan to get down socks for below freezing temps.

Down to 30F I use wool socks. Below 30, I then pull on WM down booties.

I often bring Acorn fleece socks. Cheap and light.

I also have a pair of really thick Bridgedale ski socks that work nicely for sleeping and come up high on the calf, which is nice.

And hot water bottles really are the way to go regardless of what's on your feet.

I use Darn Tough as well. I rotate 2 pair for hiking, and keep a third pair separate for sleeping but they are the same type so that I can press them into service if I needed to.

Cold sleeper here, and getting colder as the years click by. Down to 35-40F I get away nicely with any dry hiking sock. Most of the time I can go without if my sleep system is keeping up with the conditions. I find my feet are warmer exposed inside a nice toasty foot box than in tight fitting socks due to restricted blood flow, or so I assume. Below the 35-40F mark I'm looking for a loose fitting soft wool sock. Something equal to what I will be hiking in anyway. I can sleep fine with cool feet bordering on cold but not so with my torso.

I sleep with looser wool socks and a fleece footbox liner in the bottom of my bag. gives my feet room to breath and move around and stay warm

I have used a method that has been working well for me for years. I took a pair of heavyweight smartwool winter socks and cut them way down to ankle level and hemmed them. Super comfortable, super warm and about 2 oz and can double as back up socks.

Another Goose Feet supporter here. I'd go so far as to say they easily extend my comfort range down 5 deg. or more.

There is no wool sock or otherwise that compares.
