Hi All,

I've been using a large hex pyramid tarp for my dog and I. It works well, but I would really like something with a smaller footprint that is simpler to setup.

So, I am thinking of making a DuoMid-sized pyramid tarp and an "L-shaped" inner to go with it. This is my basic idea for the tent's layout:

linner

I would sleep in the long portion of the L (basically the back half of the tarp). The dog would sleep in the small portion of the L. These areas would be accessed by an inverted-T zip. This would leave me 1/4 of the tarp for the vestibule. If I stake out the mid-point of the tarp and only open one side of the door, this would seem to give me a drip-free entry.

A few questions:

Has anyone made something like this before? How did it work out?
Any potential issues you see? Do you think the vestibule and drip-free entry idea would work?
DuoMid users – in your experience, would this be enough room for me and the dog? Do you wish your DuoMid was just a little bigger, maybe HMG Ultamid 2 sized?

It seems that a regular-shaped inner (rectangular) would not only be easier to set up, but offer more options. Want an L-shape? Just bring one corner of the inner in to create that shape, and make sure you put stake-out points in the middle of the ends.

I guess a rectangular inner could work, but it would be hard getting in and out with one corner bunched up. I am not sure what people do with the duo inner net when it is raining. Maybe it's not a big deal.

I prefer to have the dog inside with me – she stays warmer, has protection from bugs, and has no leash to get tangled up in when inside.

well…two reasons my dog usually needs to be in an inner: he is just as annoyed and at risk from ticks and mosquitos as I am, and because he can VERY easily just sneak out underneath the duomid and go exploring.

Not always a good idea when i'm asleep.

I too have given this a lot of thought, and have drawn it up in sketchup. The problem I run into is door access, as well as a restless dog. Dog will get claustrophobic at night and then step on me, so the solution I came up with is just a two person net tent.

The bug protection and control while one is asleep are good points.

Jennifer, I have seen pics of your Cuben Doumid/ single inernet combo..Do you switch to a larger double inner when the Chuckster is along?

John,

I'm sorry I can't be more specific but I think I recall a Mountain Hardware tent that had an L shaped inner. Anyone else recall this tent?

I forgot about that tent – it was the Mountain Hardwear Sprite 1. So my idea is similar to that, but with more room and in a pyramid tarp.

I may do a plastic tarp mockup this weekend. I'm also considering a slightly bigger mid (6' or 7' wide x 9' long – roughly HMG Ultamid 2 size) with a more traditional inner tent. If I offset the pole and the inner net a few inches, the extra width would give me a size-able vestibule and mostly drip-free entrance.

What do you need in the way of a vestibule? I've attached a Sketchup drawing showing what I thought would originally work when I was thinking same idea. I have a 66 lbs chocolate lab who changes positions 15+ times a night, which is why I eventually went full inner.

Here are the dimensions I had drawn up using the dimensions of Duomid:

oh1

oh2

f1

f2

If you can see the scaled dimensions, there is quite a bit of room, hopefully you can read all of the sizes. Hopefully this may give some scaled representation to your idea.

Thanks, that is interesting to see. I am thinking now that it would probably be too small and I'd be happier going with something larger, particularly when the inside walls are covered in frost or condensation. Maybe an extra foot or two of width would be worth it.

Yes Jimmer, I do take the duo inner when he comes along. I tried having a 1.5 inner made from Bear Paw, but that turned into a disaster.

I love the idea of an "L" inner…i have long thought about how to make that work. But the duo honestly works pretty well for me…I just have to give up the vestibule.

to create the drip free quandrant ,simply fold the corner of the floor diagionally back on to of itself with the outer corner being at the center pole. Drape the mesh down each side of the "L" . The center Zip would still work. And it would do the exact same thing as a purpose built "L" inner..

Thlhe same thing as taking a larger pack and adjusting tbe compression straps in to make it work like a smaller one.
