I use my hiking clothes in my real life and I have always been a bit wary of some of the down jackets I have tried because the cost is usually expensive and the outer fabric is gossamer so I just know I am going to feel bad when I snag and rip it that first year or two. I have a really nice and light Montbell Alpine Jacket that I rarely wear because of this. After some thought I decided instead to go back to a down jacket that uses a more durable outer fabric and a lower fill power down to help fight some of the humidity we have around here in winter where it will yo-yo above and below freezing. I was able to find an LL Bean down jacket in XXLT this fall at a Goodwill for $25 and it has been pretty good to use here and there with its possibly max of 650fp. Just two zippered hand pockets and some fleece on the collar and Velcro on the cuffs along with a draw cord at the hem are the only features it has. I am now looking for something similar with a durable outer fabric, low (550-650)fp down, a hood and that comes in big and tall sizes for a cheap price. Any suggestions?

Costco, Uniqlo, and at one point JC Penney. You can find low priced and low FP down jackets for under $100.
Lands End has a 600 fill parka that comes in XXLT, currently for $35.
I bought one a couple of years ago, size large tall with 650 fill at the time.
No hem cord, very few features, the hood is huge, and it packs down to the size of a Lazy-Boy recliner. I would not want to drag it across rocks or wear it while working under my truck scraping across asphalt but the shell is fairly durable, ripstop nylon not anything fancy like Cordura, and for $35 I don't care what happens to it.
I bought a current years model in men's small for one of my teenagers. Big difference in the fill amount and distribution from my older one so beware (probably not unusual for cheap down jackets). Still he said it was warm yesterday with a tee shirt, cotton hoody, jeans, gloves, and tennis shoes while waiting for the bus in -25 windchill.
Costco had some decent down jackets that last time I was in. Some of the Uniqlo jackets are very nice, but I would want to try one on. Watch Cabela's for sales. 6pm.com has a lot of big name brand stuff for cheap and the larger sizes are actually more available.
Thanks everyone.
