ehh..so I finally caved in this morning and tried the AquaMira drops. I have had them for some time, but was always hesitant to test them out. My fears are that I would rather not have to add chemicals to my pristine mountain water and alter the taste/smell/color. I love water. I dont drink tap water, I always filter it at home either a Brita filter or thru the filter on my fridge. I hate when I can smell bleach or chlorine or whatever it is they treat tap water with..uugh. So this morning a caved in and treated my 1 liter of tap water with AquaMira drops. Hmmmm..mixing part A with Part B did omit a bleachy chloriney smell..turning the mixture yellow in the mixing cap. Strike 1 and 2 off the bat! My hopes were that the little amount in that cap, 7 drops of A and 7 drops of B, would not be enough to effect the smell and taste of the water in the bottle. Waited 5 minutes..added the mixture to my water bottle, shook vigorously..took a quick whiff and uuggh..made my stomach turn thinking it smelled like my high school pool water!. Give it 15 minutes..maybe the smell will dissipate..ok, give it 25 minutes to be sure. 25 minutes later remove cap from drinking bottle, try not to smell it, just drink it! Ok..not sure now. I dont think it tastes any different, but I can still catch whiffs of the high school pool water. Dang, maybe the water does have a slight chlorine taste..bleach? maybe because Im indoors, at work, I can smell the faint odor and it is making me taste it too? If im out in the woods, in nature, next to a big lake or soothing stream, perhaps I wont notice? I could always add a shot of Tru-lemon to my water for the odor and taste..just a drop to conceal it and help it along, though I do love to drink cold or room temperature plain old water the best. And I did just add some chemical to my water..tatse/smell it or not, I actually mixed 2 different components and it turned yellow and i intentionaly added it to my water. It was so easy though.. I didnt have to squeeze and squeeze and squeeze. I have the steri pen also, but I dont care for that either..the UV light dose not actually kill anything..it just nueters the little bastards, and I dont want to rely on batteries. Most definetly not going back to the pump, and not going to do gravity either. HMMMM..what to do here? Chemicals, UV, or continue to squeeze? One of the single most important things we need to live…

I carry AquaMira drops and the Aquamira Frontier Straw (2 microns and 0.7oz).
When I get to what I consider a clean water source I camel up (drink) about 12 oz using the straw. The straw only gets 99.9% of the Cryptosporidium and Giardia, but that is usually good enough. Then I fill my bottles and treat with AquaMira drops. I won't need the treated water for an hour and if I let it air a little before I drink I hardly taste anything. I also carry less weight because the water I drink with the straw is inside of me right where I need it.

So I guess there is no solution..no matter how I try i will just keep failing and have to repeat it forever?
Guess I just suck it up and continue to use the sawyer squeeze..and keep aquamira as my backup system. No chemicals to mess with my water or psych.

I'm not, like, a physicist or nothing, but somehow, I don't think that is how it works.

aaarrggh..yes, boiling. Heck no!! Maybe in winter to melt some snow/ice. It looks like for now I stick with my system, it works and it tastes good. Sometimes there is no easier better way. Its definatly not the most miserable system…

Don't knock boiling! I was having way too much fun one time and decided to take several extra days fishing along my route in the Sierra. Because I had counted out my aqua mira to the exact drops I originally thought I would need (being a dumb-ass UL wanker!) I of course ran out. Fortunately I was not able to measure out the exact amount of canister gas so I had plenty, and I was surprised at how quick and easy the process was with my Jetboil. This was especially urgent because I ran out just as I was approaching "civilization" (in this case one particular high sierra pack camp) and started finding mule shit near, and even in, the water access points.

Some people seem to be able to taste the AM – I can not taste it at all. However, the initial reaction of the reagents produces some chlorine gas, so that may be some of what you experience. It *always* smells a bit of Cl the first time you crack the seal after the treatment as the gas has had no place to go. Try letting the bottle breathe for several minutes (like a fine wine, and for essentially the same reason) the first time you open it after the treatment and see if that helps.

"I was not able to measure out the exact amount of canister gas so I had plenty"

Measure weight of canister before and after each trip, divide by number of days, get a good number for ounces per day. I normally do a little less than 1 ounce per day.

Then weigh canister before each trip and divide by ounces per day and you can select a canister with just the right amount of fuel for your trip.

Then, you'll run out of both AM and canister fuel : )

or, you could get a large platypus or similar, treat the next day's water all in one go and let it sit all night. The
taste of chlorine dioxide dissipates over time.

So you think if I let it "air out" it will help? Maybe I will give it another try..outside this time..and let it breath a bit after the initial mix n shake..I'll give it a try. Thanks for advice..

I just use the tablets, and some online reading suggests that the dosage for tablets might be less than for the drops, hence less taste. I don't understand the comments about "pre-mixing" the drops in solution, because I think it is the release of gas that does the work (not a fact, just my guess). I also have the impression that off-gassing overnight helps the taste.

Thank goodness for iodine.

Why use Aqua Mira drops when Katadyn chlorine dioxide tablets are available?

Aqua Mira drops are SO 20th centuty. ;o)

The drops are the lowest price for chlorine dioxide.

So are keyboards that actually work.

If aqua mira treated water is too smelly for you, don't ever put a pea under your mattress, or you'll get bruises. Personally I can detect no odors in aqua mira treated water.

I have a few Platys and two 64 ounce Gatorade bottles that have used for 7 or 8 years. I have treated hundreds of liters water in these containers with CL02 tablets. Yes, there is a slight odor — even if I rinse them out and air dry them for several days. I ignore the odor; or more precisely I just don't think about it or even notice it. This weekend I filled the Gatorade bottles with tap water and did a trip with a friend. He mentioned he could smell something "chemical" when I poured a quart of water into a pot. No concerns on my part.

As for the taste…

Yes, I suppose there is a little bit of a chlorine taste. I am amazed that people complain about taste; the same people who will admit they hated their first beer, their first glass of wine, or their first shot of whiskey. But somehow, some way, they willingly acquired a taste for these "awful tasting" beverages.

I am confused.

Almost 40 years ago now (wow, that seems weird to write!) I went through USAF survival school somewhere in the woods around Spokane, WA.

Part of the training involved 'confidence-building' in the efficacy of iodine tabs – no ClO2 then! – for water treatment. Our instructor directed us to dip our canteens into some the most filthy, putrid manky semi-liquid any human has ever been forced to ingest, drop in a tab and wait for half an hour, then drink the resulting swill. Nobody got sick, as I recall.

Compared to that, a slight chlorine odor doesn't bother me in the least.

But I do love that spring water coming straight out of the rocks in the Catskills.

It sounds like the same murky water that we had in Fort Polk, Louisiana. The military is good about that.

I am just like you. I absolutely love water and not tap but filtered pure water. Luckily i live on a natural spring and can drink unfiltered water all day. When i first started drinking Aqua Mira i thought it was gonna be terrible but reluctantly it wasn't to bad, out in nature near water sources. So hopefully youll like it
