I was invited to go to a suburban New Years Eve party, and about half of the people will be backpackers of one ilk or another. Just for something different, I thought of bringing a small backpacker stove to set up on the patio. Then I should cook up some lightweight food and maybe serve it on crackers. This way, the non-backpackers will see what they've been missing for backpacker food.

Any suggestions?

I have packages of standard freeze-dried food, but there is no fun in that.

First a quick anecdote…

My husband's (non-backpacking) office mates used to make fun of the freeze-dried backpacking food my husband brought on his trips. Some time later, the office had a "pot luck" lunch; my husband secretly made several packages of Mountain House Lasagne, and sprinkled grated parmesan on top (as he would in the backcountry). After everyone said they liked it, he revealed its source, and they never made snide comments again.

Well, Bob — this isn't strictly backpacking food, but you could use your backpacking stove to warm up either meatballs or cocktail sausages in a zesty sauce for the party. It would be tasty, but it wouldn't really show people what you eat in the backcountry.

Crackers with spreads always is good – you can do tapas really – small plates. This can be done with dehydrated items. Also think desserts that are single bite. A good junk food blend of trail mix (my fave? Roasted cashews, yogurt covered raisins, cranberries, peanut butter chips…..)
