Dang. I couldn't resist. Signed up for "the card" and got $40 gift card. So I got a pair for $17.45 total. And with prime, they will arrive on Monday. Amazon is scary stuff.

Great deal on that shoe.

The weight though…. 12oz.? The Lone Peak 2 is the Superior 2.0's chubby older brother.

The Superior (updated 2.0 version) is stupid nimble, lightweight, and the traction is tick tick tacky. If you like the Lone Peak, you'll really like the Superior.

For disclosure, my 11.5 in men's is 26.2oz for the pair. Haven't tried the Superior but will pick up a pair of those eventually to try too

Also keep in mind that the code should work for other shoes as well. Just thought the deal combined with this shoe in particular, already having an awesome base price at $70, was a super ultra great deal.

EDIT: looks like the superior comes to about the same price if you go with the 1.5 over the 2

Ahhh, I see the weight difference between the 1.5 and 2 now. 8.7 vs 9.9 according to altra

I was interested in the original superiors but then heard a lot about the durability issues. I assume those have been fixed in the newer ones.

You know I've been into minimal shoes Eugene, but for this I don't mind trying the beefier model. I don't mind having some protection underfoot, it's the zero drop and wide toebox I'm looking for. I haven't even been running much these days anyway…mostly this is going to be a backpacking shoe.

Consider durability issues with the Lone Peak 2.0 in your purchase. At the discounted price, it's still a steal considering they're newly updated and typically run twice the amount. I just don't know how well those lugs will hold up to a multi-day trip on granite and scree.

A local runner here has lost several outsole lugs from the LP2.0 running on typical technical rocky trails. I haven't had any issues with my Superiors yet, but I'm only 4 weeks into the shoe. Could just be a bad run from the manufacturer, or it could be the rubber compound Altra is using.

So, I really like my merrell mix masters for trails in the area that are mainly jagged rock (sawtooth mountains Idaho) and the mix masters have a rock plate (nearly everything else is minimal…and even with the rock plate the sole is flexible). Does these have a rock guard of some sort or are they like merrell trail gloves?

Also…I see that they have a gaiter area in the back…what kind of Velcro is that? Would my pair of dirty girl gaiters stick to them?

There is no removable rock guard, just removable insole. I imagine a rock plate type thing is built in.

The velcro on the back is hooks on shoe, loops (soft part) on flap. This makes them compatible with dirty girl gaiters. You can effectively remove the flap.

I have no experience of these, but just ordered both the Lone Peak 2 and the Superior 2 to try them out. Thanks for the heads up on the discount.

The Superior 2 does, apparently, have a removable rock plate, per the Altra website
"Insole: 5 mm Contour Footbed with Removable StoneGuard™ Rock Protection"

But the Lone Peak 2 just says regular insole, so presumably the rock plate is built in.
