I'm thinking of taking my 5 year old on her second backpack in Joshua Tree in a couple of weeks. We'd go for a single night and max 2 miles out. I have wonderful memories of Joshua Tree camping as a child- but I was slightly older at the time. I'm having some pre trip anxiety and wondering if anyone can either reassure me that we can avoid the cholla, not get lost, not spill all our water and generally have a fun time. Will Joshua Tree be too cold? We could also go to Anza Borrego.

Also:
any suggestions for a good launch point? I'd prefer to go on trail, in an area where there are daily hikers. How do I store food in Joshua Tree? In my tent?

Skull rock. Easy trails. Kids love climbing the rocks. You can camp close. No problem storing food.

Great place for a child, but you might want to consider day hikes staged from a motel. JT is sometimes brutally cold, windy and exposed in the winter.

We'll be staying about 2 hours away so have a lot of flexibility about going (or not). I'll definitely be watching the weather.
