For those leaving those 2 pound video cameras at home, this may be a new lighter weight option:
Sanyo Xacti DMX-HD700
At 189 grams (6.6 ounces), for 720p HD recording, one maybe willing to tote this along! I do not think it is available in the US, but it sounds like it will be in the near future.
Does anyone know of other lightweight HD video cameras?
I used another version of the Xacti (HD2) on my Tahoe Rim Trail hike and covereage for the newspaper I work for, and really liked it – good zoom, image quality, easy to use even while hiking.
Unfortunatly, because the videos are hosted by Utube, the HD quality doesn't translate, but you can see what I did at:

Besides the XActi which keep getting better you should look at the latest from Panasonic HDCSD5 is the top of the line right now. The Panasonic SDRS10 is not in the same class (not HD) it's quite light at 6.4 ounces and touted as pretty weatherproof. The Panasonic SD1 is a level below the SD5.
This is a fast changing market so if you don't need it right now you should wait.
