We are heading to Moab in late February in our 4wd Sportsmobile. I'm looking for suggestions for backcountry areas for boondocking as well suggestions for hikes and short backpacks in the area as well as the various sections of Canyonlands.
Our favorite thing to do is drive into a backcountry area, then use the van as a basecamp for hiking. Guidebook recommendations are also welcome.

Michael, it's hard to pick a place to begin, though Moab is probably the worst area in the entire southern half of Utah when it comes to finding a nice free place to camp. With a 4WD Sportsmobile I'd head further west. The Maze, Robbers Roost area, San Rafael Swell, and Escalante all have a functionally endless number of remote places to camp for free with great scenery and go hiking. The Hidden Splendor airstrip in the Swell, Wolverine/Silver Falls area in the Escalante, and Roost Spring in the Robbers Roost are the first such places which come to mind.

Steve Allen's Canyoneering 1 will tell you everything you need to know about the Swell, and Canyoneering 3 will do the same for the Escalante.

If you do stay in the Moab area, Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands has a year round campsite. I do highly recommend the Syncline loop here as a day hike. One ranger recommended it to me as her favorite in this area, and it didn't disappoint. It starts at Upheaval dome. If you're not used to this kind of landscape, you may want to bring a gps.
