So I did the Royal Arch Loop in the Grand Canyon last week. I had an absolute blast. When doing the 20 foot rappel we noticed something blue in the ravine. I decided to go down to investigate. When I found the 3rd water bottle I was noticing a trend, by the 5th water bottle I was just laughing. Lesson learned – be careful with items in side pockets around cliffs! The collection

Notice which bottle not only survived the fall, but didn't even lose its mystery liquid! (We thought iced tea, most likely…).

Thank you Nick for the housekeeping.

Given the challenges of doing that hike, I'm surprised at both the attitude and the resulting amount of trash.

I've done many hikes in the GC and have seldom found anything, let alone a bin full.

I'm glad your trip went well.

I should add that these weren't really right below the base of the rappel – they were in a gully that took some steep scrambling to get down into. Still not very far away, but I'm understanding of those who didn't go down and retrieve their bottles.

That said, still a lot of trash. The picture of a munter hitch is my favorite. I also got a new vacuum flask, out of the river!

Maybe this should get moved to the thread on "cheap things that work as good or better than expensive things".

I could quite reach the side pocket on my pack and left one halfway down a steep bank on the Baker River. It didn't break— it just laid there taunting me. My wife wouldn't let me attempt a retrieval. Had to go to Goodwill again!

There is that bear in Yosemite that learned to roll bar cans off a cliff— must have learned from the Nalgenes. Did you know that the Nalgenes were a Canaanite tribe of water merchants? ;)

Sweet booty biner and ATC ;) i'd be scared as hell if someone brought a picture of Munter along with them.. hopefully it wasn't the same person who dropped the picture and ATC!
